Fun.’s ‘We Are Young’ featuring Janelle Monáe

After kicking Adele off the top spot in the American charts, New York-based Indie band, Fun., are setting out to dominate the UK with their hit single, ‘We are Young‘ featuring R&B singer Janelle Monae. The single has been taken to very well here in the UK as it has peaked at number 2 on the iTunes download charts, but can it reflect this success and début in a top spot on the official charts this week? It is not quite the phenomenal that wasCall Me Maybe’, but it does seem to have come from nowhere, giving the charts a more alternative feel.

With folk-like vocals that echo that of Mumford and Sons, there is a solemnity that flows throughout the track as it takes the shape of the soft-rock ballad found throughout the emo scene. It is very alternative in its use of the stripped down instrumentals and slow vocals, but the military drum beats give it a more upbeat feel with the chanting chorus. ‘We Are Young‘ has an old-school anthem feel to it that is reflective of the the typical American Western-pop-rock hybrid found in the soundtracks of countless high-school dramas. It is, however, overall very bland as it misses out on a great opportunity to introduce a soulful depth with the vocals provided by Janelle Monae. Monae is entirely overshadowed and not at all noticed!
